PRESS RELEASE: Stempel Enters Greenfield, Mass. City Council Race

HeadshotNewcomer has plans to re-engage Greenfield’s younger population

GREENFIELD, Mass., April 24, 2015 – Ashli V. Stempel, marketing professional and Greenfield native, today announced her candidacy in the November 3, 2015 election for Greenfield City Council, Precinct 8.

Born and raised in Greenfield, Stempel lived the majority of her childhood in Precinct 8. She attended Newton Elementary and Greenfield High School, and is a member of the GHS graduating class of 2005. After high school, Stempel attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts degree in journalism and minor in communications studies. In 2012 Stempel returned home to build her career in the Pioneer Valley.

“I definitely moved home to roll up my sleeves and get to work,” said Stempel. “One of the main reasons I moved back home from Boston is to get involved in helping Greenfield realize its full potential.  I bring not only my education, but a diverse amount of experience gained in the private sector.”

In the three years since her return, Stempel has already made a positive impact in the region. In 2013 she worked to start an IT company and as a result created nearly 10 full-time jobs for the Valley. She donates her marketing expertise to local organizations like the Greenfield Public Schools, and was appointed to the Sustainable Greenfield Implementation Committee in January. Fitness is also important to Stempel, and last year she created Franklin County Fitness, a free community-based fitness club.

When asked why she wants to run for city council, she said it’s all about getting young people involved. “There is definitely a generational engagement-gap in Greenfield. When I look at what people my age are doing in the communities of Holyoke and Springfield, I know that it can be done here, too,” she said. “There is a critical need for a diversity of ideas and voices on the council and in our local government in general. By running for city council I hope to engage all generations in the long-term future of Greenfield, and help make Greenfield a place where people want to settle in and can gain meaningful employment and live rich, cultured lives.”

Stempel lives on Grove Street with her boyfriend and his seven year-old daughter. She is a marketing and new business manager at Smith College Executive Education for Women and a SPIN instructor at the Burning Heart Hot Yoga, Pilates, and Indoor Cycling studio in Greenfield. She will begin collecting signatures from her neighbors in Precinct 8 in coming weeks, and will announce details of upcoming fundraiser and community events as they become available.
